Cyber safety should be enhanced for stronger security

The combat against violators in the field of big data should be further strengthened to ensure people can have a stronger sense of security, fulfillment and happiness in cyberspace, an official from China's top internet regulator said.

"While data has become an important strategic and basic resource, a series of problems, such as theft, leakage and abuse in the area, have also been frequently emerging," Guo Tao, deputy head of the cybersecurity and coordination bureau with the the Cyberspace Administration of China, told a forum on Friday.

"These problems have brought great threats to the national security, public interests and personal information rights, so it's essential to innovate measures in the data governance, with endeavor to improve the capability of protecting the data security and personal information," he added.

He said that it is a must to maximize the value of data on the basis of ensuring security, emphasizing the significance of implementing the Data Security Law and the Personal Information Protection Law.

At the same time, he highlighted the significance of regulating the application of new technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence, calling for stronger security assessment and legal supports to promote their healthy development.

In addition, the risk prevention of critical information infrastructure such as finance, energy, communications and transportation, should be comprehensively enhanced, he said, suggesting more efforts be applied in the construction of systems on cybersecurity monitoring, early warning, risk assessment, emergency response and recovery.

His remarks were made during a forum concerning national security in the new era, which was mainly held by Security Today, a journal of People's Daily, in Beijing on Friday.

Themed "Pursuing and implementing a holistic approach to national security to ensure high-quality development and high-level security", the forum attracted a number of government officials, academic researchers and employers to share their security ideas in various areas, such as in food safety, environmental protection and disaster prevention.

For example, Gong Guoqiang, from the National Health Commission, said that monitoring and assessment for preventing food security risks have been set up, with greater research on major pollutants and food-borne diseases.

Li Lihua, from the People's Public Security University of China, said that it is urgent to increase theoretical research and boost technological innovation on national security, with more focus on relevant talent education.
