Zheng Zeguang, Chinese ambassador to the UK, said in his speech at the opening ceremony that films are a mirror of reality as well as an important vehicle for cultural exchange.
Since the signing of the China-UK Film Co-production Agreement in 2014, the two sides have engaged in fruitful cooperation such as joint production, film exhibition, industry forum and talent training, Zheng said.
"These collaborations have played a positive role in promoting the development of our respective film industries, but more importantly, in enhancing the mutual understanding and friendship between our two peoples," he said.
With six Chinese films scheduled to be screened during the festival, showcasing myths, legends, sci-fi and the lives of ordinary people, Zheng stated that they will help the audience in London learn about the various dimensions of Chinese society.
"We really hope Chinese and British film institutes will introduce more indigenous films to each other's countries," Zheng said.
