The provincial public security department stated on Thursday that technical experts are working hard to verify the identities of the victims in a highway collapse that took place a day earlier in Meizhou, Guangdong province.

The collapse happened at 2:10 am on Wednesday, trapping 23 cars under almost 18 meters of road. As of Thursday afternoon, 48 people have lost their lives, and 30 others have been injured.

Immediately after the accident, public security agencies were mobilized to carry out rescue operations.

Criminal technology departments were primarily responsible for inspecting and comparing the vehicles and individuals rescued from the scene, said the authorities.

With the cooperation of the families of the deceased, the Guangdong police have collected DNA samples from each victim.
