Severe weather predicated for China this upcoming weekend

Rainy weather is expected to hit both South and North China in the next few days, with the potential for severe convective weather, according to Weather China.

From Friday through Saturday, due to the northward movement of warm and moist air from the southwest and the southward movement of cold air from the north, heavy rainfall will hit areas like Hunan province, Jiangxi province, the southwestern part of Zhejiang province, the northwestern part of Fujian province, the northern part of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and the northern part of Guangdong province, said Min Yuqiu, a meteorological analyst with Weather China.

Min added that although heavy rainfall is not expected to hit the southern part of Guangxi and the southern part of Guangdong - areas that have received the heaviest precipitation since May began - areas in Hunan, Jiangxi and Fujian will experience heavy rainfall, coinciding with previous events.

Min warned of the potential risk of geographic hazards in these areas, including floods and waterlogging.

The cumulative precipitation in these areas is expected to range from 40 to 80 millimeters, with certain areas exceeding 200 mm. The most intense rainfall is anticipated between Friday night and Saturday.

In addition, a combination of a cold vortex system at high altitudes and a cyclone at ground level during this period will trigger rainfall in North China, with some areas experience severe convective weather such as thunderstorm gales and hail, Min said.

In North China, despite the relatively low intensity of precipitation, characterized by scattered showers or thunderstorms, the combination of high temperature from a few days ago and the presence of a cold vortex will possibly trigger severe convective weather.

The conducive dynamic conditions in the northeastern region may lead to the formation of squall lines, bringing strong winds or even tornadoes.

Areas of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region and Northeast China will have the strongest wind, with winds blowing as strong as 7 to 9 on the 13-tier Beaufort scale ranging from 0 to 12.

Sand and dust weather is also expected in North China, Min said.
