The Beijing Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources released the plan for Beijing's greenway system (2023-2035) on Wednesday. The plan states that the capital will establish a greenway network of over 5,000 kilometers by 2035.
According to the plan, the greenway network will connect the central urban areas, plains and mountainous regions, allowing residents to enjoy green spaces easily.
In accordance with the central government's greenway planning and design guidelines issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, greenways are corridors that rely on and are formed by natural elements. They link urban and rural recreational and leisure green open spaces, primarily for recreation and fitness, while also serving as pathways for green commuting for residents and wildlife migration.
Since 2013, Beijing has been building greenways, completing more than 40 projects, including the second-ring-road greenway, the "Three Mountains and Five Gardens" greenway and the Garden Expo greenway.
Currently, Beijing has completed approximately 1,465 km of greenways of various types and levels, restoring and integrating ecological resources along the routes, making them vital links for a balance between humans and nature.
