Delivery order raises red flags, riders save woman from attempted suicide

Two quick-thinking delivery riders in Lichuan, Hubei province, are credited with rescuing a woman who attempted suicide by jumping into the Qingjiang River early on May 30.

Wei Qin, a Meituan delivery rider working the night shift, delivered an order to a woman at a square near the riverbank who appeared distressed and tearful. Although concerned, Wei had other deliveries and rushed on without checking the order's contents.

Continuing his route, Wei's unease grew. He stopped, checked the woman's order, and discovered it contained liquor and razor blades. He immediately shared his concerns with fellow riders, urging them to check on the woman. After completing another delivery, Wei raced back to the riverbank.

By the time Wei's colleague Yang Fengming arrived at the scene upon receiving Wei's message, the woman had already jumped into the river. The woman's friend attempted a rescue but struggled against the current. Witnessing the struggle, Yang and Wei sprang into action.

"It was dark and raining heavily, and the current was strong," recounted Yang. "Her friend couldn't pull her back alone. We worked together, pulling from the shore while her friend pushed from the water, and finally managed to get her to safety."

Following the rescue, Wei called for an ambulance. The two riders remained by the woman's side, offering comfort until medical help arrived.

Reflecting on the experience, Yang stated, "I couldn't just ignore it. I would have felt terrible if I hadn't done anything."
