Yu Zhiying, a 32-year-old diver from Zhengzhou, Henan province, achieved a remarkable feat among post-90s generation Chinese diver by reaching a depth of 100 meters in an international free immersion competition recently.

The 2024 Asian Freediving Cup, held from May 26 to June 5 on Bonau Island, Philippines, drew nearly 100 divers from around the world. Yu performed exceptionally well in Free Immersion (FIM) by diving to 100 meters and securing the third position in the event, which currently ranks him third in China and sixth in Asia.

"When people are doing this sport, the more relaxed, the better," said Yu, highlighting the significant mental fortitude required in free diving. He also explained the importance of staying in a state of profound calmness to reduce heart rate, preserve oxygen and enhance performance.

Yu recalled his memories during his trip to Mauritius at the age of 26.

"At that time, I was diving with a gas cylinder, and I observed someone nearby diving without any oxygen equipment. A strong desire to learn free diving occurred in me," he said.

Since 2021, Yu has undergone rigorous professional training and has become a certified free diving instructor recognized by the AIDA international authority.

"Prior to diving, I focus on controlling my breath, seeking inner peace and I also enjoy the unique tranquility that water offers," he said.
