BEIJING -- Zheng Xuelin, former chief judge of the No 1 Civil Adjudication Tribunal of China's Supreme People's Court, has been indicted on charges of taking bribes, according to the Supreme People's Procuratorate.

Following the investigations by the National Commission of Supervision, the people's procuratorate of Taiyuan in north China's Shanxi Province filed Zheng's case with the city's intermediate people's court, the SPP said in a statement on Friday.

Prosecutors accused Zheng, also a former member of the trial committee of the SPC, of taking advantage of his judicial positions to unlawfully seek profits for others, in exchange for huge sums of money and valuables.

After retirement, Zheng utilized the convenience afforded by his former roles to pursue illegitimate interests for others and accepted an especially huge amount of wealth in return, according to the statement.

Prosecutors had informed the defendant of his litigation rights, interrogated him, and listened to the defense counsel's arguments, the statement noted.
