BRUSSELS -- Due to the poor performance of his party, Open VLD, in the parliamentary elections, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced on Sunday evening that he will resign as of June 10.
The Open VLD suffered a significant electoral setback in the prime minister's stronghold of Brakel in East Flanders. "For us, this is a particularly difficult evening, we have lost. As of tomorrow, I will be a resigning Prime Minister," he told supporters during a brief speech.
De Croo congratulated winners of the elections during his speech.
Belgians were called to cast ballots for a new federal parliament, regional parliaments, and members of the European Parliament all on Sunday.
