At the recently concluded Intersolar Europe 2024 trade show, a commercial M6 size wafer-level silicon-perovskite tandem solar cell was unveiled to the public. With a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 30.1 percent, the product has set a new world record.

LONGi Green Energy Technology Co Ltd, a world-leading solar energy company, is the developer of the high-efficiency solar cell.

He Bo, director of the Central R&D Institute at LONGi, said the solar cell has been certified by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, the largest solar research institute in Europe.

He said the 30.1-percent conversion efficiency marks a huge breakthrough in the sector and will significantly improve the commercial value of the product.

He said LONGi has always been committed to increasing solar cell efficiency. Just a week before Intersolar Europe 2024, the company presented a tandem solar cell with 34.6-percent conversion efficiency at the SNEC PV Power Expo 2024 held in Shanghai.

The maximum theoretical efficiency of wafer-level silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells is 43 percent, and has become a research focus of the global photovoltaic industry, said He.

Meanwhile, LONGi has stepped up efforts to promote the mass production of the tandem solar cells and tackled two major challenges within six months – the preparation of large-area perovskite films in air and ultra-low-temperature metallization.

With a research and development team of over 5,000 people, LONGi has invested more than 30 billion yuan ($4.13 billion) in photovoltaic research and obtained 2879 patents over the past few years.

The company said it will continue to improve product quality and advance the upgrading of renewable energy industries such as photovoltaics and hydrogen.
