Wuhan cyclist searches for lost canine companion after 12 years of adventures

A cyclist in Wuhan, Hubei province, is desperately searching for his beloved canine companion, Xiao Sa, who went missing after a bus ride on Friday.
Zhang Heng and Xiao Sa, a stray dog Zhang adopted in 2012, have been inseparable for over twelve years, sharing countless cycling adventures across China.
Zhang's bond with Xiao Sa began in 2012 during a cycling trip with friends on the Chengdu-Lhasa Highway. A simple act of kindness —offering food to a stray dog — sparked a remarkable journey.
The dog, later named Xiao Sa, defied attempts to be left behind, determinedly following Zhang for 1,700 kilometers all the way to Lhasa. Their perseverance through challenging terrain forged an unbreakable connection.
Zhang bought a small iron cage and placed it on the back seat of his bicycle. However, Xiao Sa still preferred to run along, only choosing to rest inside the cage when tired.
Xiao Sa's loyalty and resilience captured the hearts of many. Zhang created a social media account for Xiao Sa, garnering over 193,000 followers on Sina Weibo. Their story received widespread media coverage, including appearances on national television shows and international recognition. Their adventures were even immortalized in a book by Zhang, titled GO GO Xiao Sa.
Despite Xiao Sa's mature age, estimated to be around 40 in human years when they met, Zhang described the dog as energetic and healthy. They celebrated May 4, the anniversary of their meeting, as Xiao Sa's birthday, a testament to the life-changing encounter. Over twelve years, they cycled through more than 20 cities together.
Due to Xiao Sa's docile nature and its love of running and freedom, Zhang chose not to lock it in a cage. And It never went too far from home if it was allowed to go outside.
Tragedy struck on Friday when Xiao Sa boarded bus number 908 at the Huazhong Nongda stop. The dog traveled all the way to Jiangxia district before disappearing near the central street. Zhang, along with concerned citizens, are actively searching for Xiao Sa, hoping for a swift and happy reunion.
