BEIJING -- Peng Guofu, former vice-chairman of the standing committee of the Hunan Provincial People's Congress, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and removed from public office over serious violations of Party discipline and laws.

According to a statement released on Sunday, the decision was made following an investigation by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision upon the approval of the CPC Central Committee.

The investigation found that Peng had lost his ideals and faith, fished for political capital, and engaged in statistics and data counterfeiting.

Peng was also found to have used his positions to seek benefits for others in project contracting and enterprise operation, accepting huge amounts of money and valuables in return.

Given this, the statement said Peng had committed duty-related violations and is suspected of the crime of accepting bribes.

It was decided that Peng's illicit gains would be confiscated, and his case would be transferred to the procuratorial authorities for examination and prosecution, according to the statement.
