China Daily | Updated: 2024-07-08 07:30

Premier Li Qiang sent a message on Sunday to Keir Starmer, congratulating him on assuming office as Britain's prime minister.

Noting that China and Britain are both permanent members of the United Nations Security Council as well as major world economies, Li said that strengthening coordination and cooperation serves the interests of the two countries, which is also conducive to addressing global challenges in unity with the international community.

Li said the Chinese government attaches great importance to its relationship with Britain, and stands ready to work with the new British government to consolidate mutual political trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges.

By doing so, it helps to support the economic and social development of both countries, and to jointly promote world peace, stability and prosperity, Li said.

Starmer, who led the Labour Party to achieve a landslide victory in Britain's general election, officially became the 58th prime minister after meeting with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in London on Friday.
