Located within the Shanghai New Hongqiao International Medical Center, Shanghai Xiehua Brain Hospital, which is funded by the United States Bain Capital-backed Asia-Pacific Medical Group (APMG) and is dedicated to providing high-quality medical services for patients with central nervous system diseases, held its opening ceremony on Friday.

Construction of the hospital, which involves a total investment of 1.2 billion yuan ($166 million) and features a building area of 55,000 square meters, began in 2018. It has 10 high-standard operating rooms and is equipped with cutting-edge, large-scale imaging devices and specialized neurosurgery equipment.

For example, the hospital is the first private medical institution in the country to adopt a 5.0T ultra-high field MRI imaging system developed and produced by Shanghai United Imaging Healthcare Group.

The opening of Xiehua Brain Hospital will further improve the medical service capabilities of the Shanghai New Hongqiao International Medical Center, said industrial observers. Known for being an open and cooperative hospital, it will establish extensive connections with both domestic and international research facilities, medical institutions and enterprises to jointly promote the clinical application and transformation of research results in brain science, providing more personalized and precise treatment plans to patients.

"Shanghai Xiehua Brain Hospital is a milestone project for Bain Capital's investment in China's healthcare sector. The construction took six years, making it our first self-built hospital in China and the hospital with the largest investment to date," said Jonathan Zhu, partner and co-head of Asia Private Equity at Bain Capital.

So far, through APMG, Bain Capital operates 11 hospitals in China, which have essentially formed a group specialty in neurology, oncology, and rehabilitation.
