The 2024 World New Energy and New Materials Conference started in the city of Ordos — located in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region — on July 26.

With its theme of "New Quality Productive Forces, New Driving Forces for Economy", the two-day conference is looking at cutting-edge intelligence, showcasing leading industrial achievements and exploring the latest directions in the sector.

The organizers say it aims to drive forward potentially revolutionary technological breakthroughs, the innovative allocation of the factors of production and to facilitate in-depth industrial transformations and upgrades.

The conference features the World New Energy and New Materials Exhibition and the 2024 Ordos Net-Zero Industry Conference.

It also includes the New Energy and New Quality Productivity Development Conference and the Coal-Based New Materials Sub-Forum.

To enhance the event's international scope, the event is for the first time concurrently hosting the Northeast Asia Regional Governments Association Subcommittee on Energy Cooperation Conference.

This initiative aims to build a platform for regional energy exchanges and cooperation — promoting the prosperity and progress of the energy industry in Northeast Asia.

During the conference, significant technological achievements in the new energy and new materials fields were unveiled – including in areas ranging from biomass to aviation fuel key technology and in silicon carbon anode materials.

Additionally, the 2024 Hurun China Top 100 New Energy Potential Enterprises list and the 2024 Hurun China Top 100 New Materials Companies list were released at the event, with five Ordos-based companies making the cut.

In a video address at the opening ceremony, Francesco La Camera, director-general of the International Renewable Energy Agency, highlighted China's pivotal role in promoting renewable energy.

He noted that about 63 percent of the global increase in renewable energy capacity last year occurred in China, which was also a major player in global renewable energy investment.

La Camera emphasized the close cooperation being undertaken with China's National Energy Administration and other stakeholders to support the global energy transition.

Du Huiliang, mayor of Ordos, told the conference that since the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), his city had focused on building a significant national energy and strategic resource base.

Moreover, Ordos had achieved breakthroughs in several key technologies for clean and efficient energy utilization and established mechanisms for green and low-carbon energy development — contributing positively to the national dual carbon strategy, as well as the country's energy transition and energy security.
