China's largest oil field achieves historic milestone

Changqing oilfield, China's largest oil-and-gas field, achieved a historic milestone recently by producing a cumulative total of 1 billion metric tons of oil and gas equivalent, according to PetroChina Changqing Oilfield Company.

Last year, it became the first oilfield in China to pass the 60-million-ton mark in annual oil and gas output, a landmark in China's energy history.

Situated in Northwest China's Ordos Basin, the Changqing oilfield has played an important role in safeguarding the country's energy security. Since the 1970s, its accumulated proven oil and gas reserves account for around one-third of the country's total.

Since it first began supplying natural gas in 1997, the oilfield has provided over 650 billion cubic meters of natural gas to more than 50 large and medium-sized cities in regions such as Beijing, Shaanxi and Gansu. This amount of natural gas could replace approximately 790 million tons of standard coal, reducing carbon emissions by around 1 billion tons, it said.
