Sino-German joint venture BMW Brilliance has become the first carmaker in China to use green hydrogen trucks for logistics transportation after having helped establish the first hydrogen refueling station in Shenyang, Liaoning province.
Franz Decker, president and CEO of the company, said "With the support of governments at all levels, BMW Brilliance has joined forces with local partners to align with China's hydrogen energy development plan and actively drive innovation and development in the hydrogen energy industry."
Over the years, the carmaker has committed to sustainable development, with its exploration in hydrogen logistics being the latest initiative.
Hydrogen trucks offers significant advantages in logistics, such as long range, quick refueling, light weight, and zero emissions.
Earlier this year, BMW Brilliance encouraged its logistics partner, Huatong Logistics, to incorporate hydrogen trucks into commercial operations, creating practical demand for the refueling station.
Meanwhile, China Huadian has employed cutting-edge technology for large-scale green hydrogen production, providing a hydrogen source for the station.
Local authorities in Shenyang and its Dadong district encouraged China National Petroleum Corporation to join the efforts to build the hydrogen refueling station.
Decker said BMW is confident about the prospects of green hydrogen energy.
With over 40 years of experience in hydrogen-powered systems, particularly in hydrogen fuel cell technology, BMW has developed substantial expertise and technical advantages, he said.
BMW has revealed plans to launch its first-ever series production fuel cell electric vehicle in 2028.
