Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital's trauma department in the Guangdong provincial capital is providing surgeries and rehabilitation treatment for 16 patients from the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region with limb disabilities.

The hospital and the Red Cross Society of China Xinjiang Branch are fully funding the patients' medical expenses for limb correction, rehabilitation and round-trip transportation through a public welfare project they jointly launched.

Sun Dawei, director of the hospital's trauma orthopedics department, said his treatment team had completed various preoperative examination preparations for the patients, with some having already undergone their first surgical treatment.

The patients, the youngest of whom is only 8 years old, arrived at the hospital at the end of last month and were set up to stay in dedicated wards, he said.

Sun said his team would map out detailed treatment and rehabilitation plans based on each patient's condition in the following weeks.

"We hope to be able to help patients regain certain limb functions, achieve self-care and even partially approach the shape and function of healthy limbs through the treatment," he said.

Sun's team has utilized techniques, such as Taylor space braces for correction, to provide each patient with the most precise and effective treatment.

Sun said the patients also need a rehabilitation period of between three and six months in the wake of the surgeries. His team has contacted local hospitals in Xinjiang to provide support for follow-up visits and rehabilitation training in the months to come.
