The 6th World Media Summit opened on Monday morning in Urumqi, the capital city of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

The summit, titled "Artificial Intelligence and Media Transformation," brought together over 500 participants from 106 countries and regions, including representatives from 208 mainstream media outlets, government agencies and international organizations.

The summit's discussions revolved around the rapid development of artificial intelligence and the opportunities and challenges it presents to the global media industry, the role and responsibilities of media in the new wave of technological revolution and industrial transformation, and how to effectively tell the story of global modernization to promote worldwide development.

The event resulted in the Urumqi Consensus, released on Monday. It emphasizes that the governance of artificial intelligence is crucial to humanity's fate and is a common issue faced by countries worldwide.

Furthermore, the Urumqi Consensus highlighted that global media should judiciously utilize new AI technologies, innovate news gathering and dissemination methods and accelerate their pace of intelligent and digital transformation.

Media outlets worldwide are urged to uphold journalistic ethics and professional standards and disseminate truthful, objective, comprehensive and impartial news to the public.

Co-hosted by Xinhua News Agency and the regional government of Xinjiang, the event included a 3-day visit to Xinjiang for participants to experience the region's deep history, vibrant culture, and achievements in economic and social development firsthand. This showcased the real version of Xinjiang to the international community.

Established in 2009, the World Media Summit is a global platform for high-level media exchanges initiated by several renowned domestic institutions. The previous five editions were held in Beijing (twice), Moscow, Doha, Guangzhou in Guangdong province and Kunming in Yunnan province. Each summit has played a crucial role in strengthening friendly exchanges and practical cooperation among media outlets worldwide.
