An independent energy storage project in Nagchu, Xizang autonomous region, was successfully connected to the State Grid and began transmitting power on Monday.

At an altitude of more than 4,600 meters above sea level in Sernyi district, the power station — Xizang Kaitou Sernyi District Dagapu Independent Grid-Connected Energy Storage Station — is described as the world's highest altitude and largest capacity independent storage project. It marks a significant milestone in the region's renewable energy landscape, People's Daily reported.

With an investment of 452 million yuan ($62 million) for a total installed capacity of 100MW/400MWh, the station is poised to deliver an estimated 180 million kWh per year. Over its projected 20-year life span, the project aims to contribute 4.67 billion kWh of clean energy to the grid, thereby saving more than 1.86 million metric tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 468,600 tons.

Nagchu, known for its abundant clean energy sources, has seen a surge in the deployment of photovoltaic power, wind power and hydroelectric power projects in recent years.

As the share of renewable energy in the power system continues to rise, the demand for regulating resources becomes increasingly pressing. The independent grid-connected energy storage station functions as a reliable power bank, capable of filling in for failures in the vicinity.
