Largest ancient Egyptian exhibition in Shanghai set to break visitor records

The ongoing exhibition at Shanghai Museum, On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt, received its 1 millionth visitor on Monday.

Accepting a souvenir from Chu Xiaobo, director of Shanghai Museum, 21-year-old Hua Jiawen, a university student from Changzhou, Jiangsu province, told the media that she and several schoolmates were art majors.

"We made the appointment to see the ancient Egypt exhibition in order to have some learning experience," Hua said. "I didn't expect I would be so lucky, to be the 1 millionth visitor!"

According to the Shanghai Museum, 70 percent of the visitors to the exhibition were not from Shanghai. Since its opening on July 18, the museum has raked in more than 142 million yuan ($19.57 million) from sales of exhibition-related merchandise.
