Smart charging system deployed to close mismatch

To provide operators with optimal location choices and enhance cost-effective construction of charging piles, a smart siting system for EV charging stations, integrating social charging demand with grid capacity considerations, has been employed in Kunshan of Suzhou, Jiangsu province.

“When charging station operators choose sites based solely on charging demand without understanding the surrounding grid structure, they may face grid limitations requiring costly upgrades after site approval,” said Zhu Chaoyun, a specialist from the State Grid Suzhou Power Supply Co. He added that the current market-driven construction of charging facilities often leads to mismatches between site selection and grid capacity.

To address the problem, a smart siting system for EV charging stations that integrates power grid big data with transportation and vehicle data has come of horizon and starts to enable a seamless exchange of information between grid and traffic networks in Kunshan of Suzhou, Jiangsu province.

By analyzing the datasets, the platform generates "hotspot maps" of charging demand and optimal siting recommendations, offering scientific guidance to charging station operators.

“Beyond traffic data such as vehicle flow and movement patterns, the platform incorporates grid factors like capacity and stability, maximizing the efficient use of grid resources and promoting harmonious co-development of charging stations and the grid,” Zhu added.
