From a cultural facility compound that blends into the old historical town of Dali, Yunnan province, to a restoration project in Shanghai that transforms a storage into a lush destination for citizens to hang out, designs by homegrown architects these years have renewed the urban landscapes and people's perceptions of the relation between design and lifestyle.

Breezes from the Sea, an exhibition until Feb 28 at China Art Museum, Shanghai, gathers such examples of the year to reflect latest developments in architectural design. Some have been completed and become city landmarks, and some are conceptual.

It shows how architects and their commissioners try to balance between tradition and modernism, and to address rural revitalization and urban renewal.
