China has urged Afghanistan to severely punish the perpetrators and take forceful measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens, institutions and projects after a Chinese mine worker was killed in an attack in the South Asian nation on Tuesday.

It's reported that the Islamic State group later claimed responsibility for the attack.

"China is deeply shocked by the attack and strongly condemns it while expressing condolences over the death of the victim," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Thursday.

Following the incident, China urgently lodged a solemn representation with Afghanistan, demanding a thorough investigation and severe punishment of the perpetrators, Mao told a daily news briefing.

Emphasizing that China firmly opposes all forms of terrorism, Mao called for resolute and strong action against terrorist organizations listed by the United Nations Security Council with zero tolerance and connivance.

"China will continue to closely monitor the security situation in Afghanistan and support the country in combating all forms of terrorist and violent activities to maintain national security and stability," she said.
