5.6-magnitude earthquake strikes off Indonesia's Maluku province, no tsunami threat

Xinhua | Updated: 2025-03-03 15:58

JAKARTA -- A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's eastern Maluku province early Monday, but it did not trigger large waves, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency said.

The tremor occurred at 01:42 am local time on Monday, with the epicenter located 63 km southeast of Maluku Tengah Regency at a depth of 10 km, the agency said.

"It is confirmed that there was no serious impact from the tremor, no serious damage or casualties," Sandhy Luhulima, a senior official of the emergency unit of the provincial disaster management agency, told Xinhua over the phone.

Indonesia, an archipelagic nation home to 127 active volcanoes, frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone prone to tectonic activity.
