China asks Japan to honor its Taiwan commitments

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun urged Japan on Monday to honor its commitments, exercise prudence regarding the Taiwan question, and maintain the momentum of improvement and development in China-Japan relations.

Guo's remarks came after Foreign Minister Wang Yi's recent visit to Japan, during which Wang emphasized the importance of adhering to the four political documents between China and Japan that clearly outline China's stance on the Taiwan question.

"Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The Taiwan question is at the very core of China's core interests. It bears on the political foundation of China-Japan relations and the basic trust and good faith between the two countries," Guo said at a regular news briefing.

Noting Japan's undeniable historical responsibility concerning the Taiwan question, Guo cautioned against fallacies such as "any contingency for any contingency for Taiwan is a contingency for Japan" or "the 1972 China-Japan Joint Statement is not legally binding".

"These notions severely undermine the political foundation of China-Japan relations. Such ideas are not only preposterous but also extremely dangerous," Guo said.
