Journalists stress role in climate fight at Seoul conference

Journalists from around the world underscored the critical role of the press in addressing climate change, vowing to amplify their voices in pursuit of sustainable development.

During a session of the World Journalists Conference 2025 in Seoul, more than 60 media professionals from over 50 countries exchanged views and suggestions on covering climate change.

Tsegahun Asefa Shimekit, an editor from Ethiopia, said journalism plays a fundamental role in raising awareness, providing essential information, and driving change on climate issues. He emphasized the importance of science-based, unbiased reporting amid growing environmental challenges and voiced concern over the rapid spread of misinformation fueled by artificial intelligence and social media.

"As media professionals, we must combat disinformation through rigorous fact-checking, data verification, and reliance on credible sources," he said, calling for broader societal engagement to tackle the global crisis and push for a sustainable future.

Gianmarco Volpe, a journalist from Italy, said his country faces significant climate challenges but cited a 2022 study showing that only 35 percent of Italians read news about nature. He urged media organizations to continue covering climate issues to better inform the public.

As part of the conference, participants also visited renewable energy production facilities and charging stations on Jeju Island on Wednesday to learn about the island's efforts to develop a green hydrogen ecosystem and address climate challenges.
