Dual exhibition explores Dongguan's manufacturing soul

The main exhibit reimagines Dongguan's manufacturing aesthetics with avant-garde techniques.

In contrast, the retrospective revives the collective memory of over 200 million workers since China's reform and opening-up through documentary imagery and texts.

You described the two exhibits as mirror images that highlight Dongguan's friendly spirit through artistic expression while distilling the symbiotic relationship between people, industry, city and culture via historical documentation.

"Ultimately, they shape a three-dimensional interpretation of the idea that there is a manufacturing aesthetic called Dongguan," You added.

The exhibit has drawn significant online attention, particularly among younger audiences, making it one of the museum's most popular shows since its opening.

Xu Shali, a representative of the "200 million" who participated in Dongguan's urban development, shared her perspective: "If someone asked me why Dongguan has retained 200 million people, I'd say it's because this city allows ordinary individuals to witness the value of hard work. Young people find new jobs and opportunities here, while those with dreams and skills grow into technical experts—even 'national craftsmen'."

The exhibition will run until May 11, 2025.
