China defends South China Sea name after Google Maps update

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Tuesday that for a long time, the South China Sea has been a universally recognized place name accepted by the international community, including countries and organizations such as the United Nations.

His remarks came after Google Maps updated its display to show the name "West Philippine Sea" for the body of water next to the Philippines, previously labeled solely as the South China Sea.
