Recently, a truck loaded with sugarcane from Laos entered Mengman Port on the China-Laos border in Xishuangbanna Dai autonomous prefecture, Yunnan province, marking the beginning of the cross-border delivery of sugarcane between the two countries during the 2025-26 season, according to Yunnan.cn, a local news portal.
The new season began on Oct 29 and is projected to last until the end of April, with over 930,000 tons of sugarcane expected to arrive in China for sugar extraction and production. On the first day, over 1,500 tons of sugarcane were cleared at Mengman Port.
The industrial output value is projected to reach 620 million yuan ($87 million), representing an approximate 12 percent increase from the previous season.
As an important part of China-Laos cross-border agricultural cooperation, the sugarcane planting industry has developed a mature model, with sugarcane grown in Laos and sugar produced in China, benefiting both countries.
To address the peak in cross-border transportation during the new season, the Mohan Border Inspection Station has opened a dedicated channel for sugarcane. This ensures that vehicles are inspected promptly upon arrival, thereby improving clearance efficiency.
