JOHANNESBURG -- At least 11 people were killed and 14 others wounded in a shooting early Saturday at a hostel in South Africa's administrative capital Pretoria, local police said.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), said 10 victims died at the scene in Saulsville, Atteridgeville, and another succumbed to gunshot wounds later in a hospital, while 14 others are receiving medical treatment.

The victims included a three-year-old child and two adolescents aged 12 and 16, she added.

According to the SAPS, the shooting occurred at around 4:15 am local time (0215 GMT), when at least three unidentified gunmen stormed the building and opened fire indiscriminately.

Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive for the attack. The SAPS said an intensive investigation is underway and urged residents to remain vigilant as police continue efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
