SEOUL - The final hearing of former president Yoon Suk-yeol on charges of insurrection was held Tuesday at the Seoul Central District Court, with prosecutors scheduled to announce their sentencing recommendation later in the day, Yonhap News Agency reported.

In Yoon's case, the special counsel team is expected to seek one of the three penalties prescribed by law for the ringleader of an insurrection -- the death penalty, life imprisonment, or life imprisonment without forced labor.

Yoon was indicted last January on charges of leading an insurrection through his declaration of martial law on Dec 3, 2024. The martial law was revoked hours later by the National Assembly.

The constitutional court upheld a motion to impeach Yoon in April last year, officially removing him from office.

The ousted leader was indicted under detention in January 2025 as a suspected ringleader of insurrection.
