China hits 469m motor vehicles in 2025 amid drop in dangerous driving cases

The total number of motor vehicles nationwide reached 469 million in 2025, including 366 million automobiles, the Ministry of Public Security stated on Monday.

The number of motor vehicle drivers hit 559 million last year, with 525 million being automobile drivers. In addition, 20.51 million new driving licenses were issued.

In terms of new vehicle registrations, 35.35 million new motor vehicles were registered nationwide last year, with 26.19 million being automobiles. The annual new motor vehicle registration volume has exceeded 30 million for 11 consecutive years, according to the ministry.

Separately, data from the Supreme People's Procuratorate indicated that there was a significant drop in dangerous driving offenses, marking continuous improvements in road traffic safety.

From January to November in 2025, procuratorial organs across the country handled 236,000 dangerous driving cases transferred from public security authorities, a year-on-year decrease of 22.1 percent, and prosecuted 211,000 people, down 17.2 percent year-on-year.

Despite this decline, dangerous driving remains the most common crime handled by procuratorial organs, accounting for 14.4 percent of all criminal cases accepted.
