Over the past year, China's diplomatic missions have handled more than 100 major emergencies involving Chinese nationals and institutions, dealt with more than 79,000 consular protection and assistance cases, and received more than 600 thousand calls for help through the 12308 consular protection hotline.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi revealed the figures at a news conference on Sunday, adding that the missions have issued more than 3,000 safety alerts for Chinese nationals overseas, and rescued more than 50 citizens kidnapped in Africa.
The diplomatic missions have also safeguarded the legitimate interests of Chinese companies overseas by urging host countries to protect Chinese staff and projects.
"We have firmly opposed unreasonable crackdowns on Chinese companies, helping them improve their ability to prevent risks and protect their rights through legal means," he said.
Some Chinese diplomats are even weathering dangers and hardships, including the threats of war and disease, Wang said. "Our embassies and consulates in Iran and the Gulf countries are working to evacuate Chinese nationals and ensure their safety as we speak," he said.
