China's first domestically bred meat goat breed becomes key engine of prosperity

Technological breakthroughs followed. By introducing genomic selection breeding technology, second-generation selected goats now grow faster, produce more meat, and achieve higher lambing rates — all within a shorter production cycle.

Thanks to his efforts, Nanjiang county in Bazhong has established 2,294 standardized breeding bases with an annual output of 413,000 yellow goats. The county's four leading processing enterprises generate a combined annual output value of 1.2 billion yuan ($174.6 million).

In 2024, the Nanjiang yellow goat was included in the nationally famous, special, and superior new agricultural products list, with its brand value reaching 4.185 billion yuan.

Wang's greatest pride, however, is the "goat for goat" poverty alleviation model he pioneered: farmers get female breeding goats at no cost, and return the same number of goats after two years while keeping the rest as their own.

The model has enabled participating households to increase their annual income by as much as 50,000 yuan. It was recognized by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization as one of the world's best poverty reduction practices in 2019.
