Oppo announces breakthrough in folding screen technology

China's leading mobile phone maker Oppo has announced a breakthrough in folding screens which for years have left devices with deepening creases after prolonged use.

The world's first folding flagship product certified by the TUV Rheinland laboratory in Germany after "600,000 fold tests for long-term flatness", Oppo Find N6 has been described as leading foldable screens into a new generation of "no creases, long-lasting flatness".

When launching the Find N6 on March 17 in Dongguan, Guangdong province, Oppo Chief Product Officer Liu Zuohu said: "Today, Oppo Find N6 has broken the industrial stereotype… it remains flat after long-term use."

Experts say the root cause for folding screens' deepening creases after prolonged use lies not only in the limited flatness of the hinge support surface, but also in the irreversible deformation of the screen material after long-term bending.

According to Liu, to overcome this industrial challenge, Oppo technical workers developed two "black technologies" — the new generation titanium alloy Tianqiong hinge and Tianqiong memory glass — and achieved a revolutionary breakthrough in the flatness of folding screens from the two dimensions of structure and materials.

Liu insisted that in terms of exterior design, the new phone combines extreme lightness and top-level texture, balancing high-end texture with hardcore reliability, while in terms of imaging capability, it contains the only foldable "Hasselblad 200 million ultra-clear four camera".

Equipped with a fifth generation Snapdragon 8 Ultimate mobile platform and a super energy-efficient combination of 6000 mAh glacier batteries, in addition to specialized optimization for high-frequency office scenarios, the Oppo Find N6 is advertised to users as significantly increasing battery life.

In terms of communication capability, the Oppo Find N6 is equipped with a China-developed Shanhai Communication Enhancement Chip, supporting a total of 66 communication frequency bands, covering more than 230 countries and regions worldwide and 1,700+ operators, Liu said.

At the March 17 event, Oppo also announced that it will not rush the launch of its new artificial intelligence execution engine — Xiaobu Claw. The company states that it wants to ensure compatibility between Xiaobu Claw and user devices, and complete the necessary security protection work before meeting with clients.

Prices for the Oppo Find N6 foldable flagship range from 9,999 yuan ($1,449) for 12+256GB, 10,999 yuan for 16+512GB and 11,999 yuan for 16+1TB.
