System glitch halts Apollo Go robotaxis in Wuhan

By Cheng Yu | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2026-04-03 13:28

Several robotaxis operated by Apollo Go stalled on a main road in Wuhan, Hubei province, this week, according to local transport authorities.

Local transport police authorities said that several vehicles became immobilized in parts of the city due to what was initially assessed as a system malfunction. Traffic police were dispatched to the scene alongside company staff to manage the situation and evacuate passengers.

All passengers were safely assisted out of the vehicles and no injuries were reported. The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation, they said.

Apollo Go has yet to issue a formal public response.

The incident highlights safety challenges as China accelerates the rollout of higher-level autonomous driving services in urban environments.

In December 2025, robotaxis operated by Waymo in San Francisco halted during a power outage that knocked out traffic signals, triggering a built-in "minimum risk condition" that required vehicles to stop in place.
