Beijing intellectual property court highlights landmark cases to bolster tech innovation

The Beijing Intellectual Property Court shared details of 10 significant cases on Tuesday, underscoring its dedication to supporting advanced technologies through improved legal processes.

According to official statistics, the court resolved nearly 29,000 intellectual property disputes in 2025, bolstering IP protection for essential technologies in key sectors and emerging industries while providing legal guidance to tackle new challenges through case decisions.

"We have set up specialized teams to handle cases related to medicine, data, and seeds, with a focus on addressing legal challenges in areas like artificial intelligence, biomedicine, the platform economy, cultural creation, and anti-monopoly issues," said Song Yushui, the court's vice-president, during a news conference.

She emphasized that the 10 disclosed cases show how the court addressed gaps in industry regulations and improved legal standards, as well as helped clarify rights boundaries, regulate market behavior, enhance the business environment in the IP sector, and support high-level economic opening-up.

One notable case involved one of the country's first legal decisions on protecting AI model structures and parameters. The court ruled that the competitive advantage gained from AI model parameters and structures, developed through training and refinement, is a protectable interest that cannot be copied or used without permission.

Song explained that this case filled a regulatory gap in protecting core AI achievements, established a structured protection approach, and supported the standardized and innovative growth of the AI industry.
