The Chinese Embassy in Thailand issued a safety alert on Friday urging Chinese citizens to be highly vigilant against being lured to the Thailand-Myanmar border under false pretenses.
The alert came after recent cases found that Chinese nationals were enticed by offers of lucrative job opportunities or tour packages to travel to the Thailand-Myanmar border areas, where they ended up engaging in illegal activities such as telecom and online fraud.
Some of the individuals have faced physical confinement, violence, and illegal detention, which have seriously endangered their lives, safety, and legal rights, the embassy said.
It urged Chinese citizens visiting Thailand to be aware of risks and take safety precautions, so that they can avoid illegal activities and ensure the safety of their lives and property.
As preventive measures, the embassy recommended not trusting information from social media, short-video platforms, or instant messaging tools that advertise "lucrative job offers", "group travel invitations", or "zero-barrier overseas work opportunities".
In the event of an emergency, Chinese citizens are advised to prioritize their own safety and contact the local police or Chinese diplomatic missions in Thailand for assistance as soon as possible.
The embassy also warned that telecom fraud, online scams, and other illegal activities are subject to severe penalties under the laws of China and relevant countries.
