The 23rd International Conference on Preimplantation Genetics commenced in Shanghai on Saturday, marking the first time that the prestigious global event in reproductive genetics has been held in China.
Bringing together clinical experts and researchers from 23 countries and regions, the four-day event is focused on frontier transformations in preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) technology, contributing to global reproductive health and the prevention of birth defects.
The event is jointly hosted by the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis International Society (PGDIS), and Renji Hospital Affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, among others.
Experts explained that conventional prenatal screenings often fail to detect single-gene genetic disorders, imposing emotional and financial burdens on families and society. As a core technology in preventing birth defects, PGT enables precise analysis of genetic materials before embryo implantation, allowing for the selection of healthy embryos that do not carry pathogenic genes.
The conference includes in-depth discussions on the clinical application of non-invasive PGT, and the ethics and practice of polygenic risk PGT. In addition, Chinese experts presented the latest development of PGT technology in clinical applications in the country.
Industry experts have hailed the event as a reflection of Shanghai's growing role in the field and its commitment to fostering international collaboration and innovation in healthcare technologies.
