Beijing opens selected subway trains to cyclists

Beijing has launched a pilot program that allows passengers to bring bicycles onto subway trains at 11 stations across four lines at weekends.

The "rail + cycling" pilot, covering Lines 6 and 17, the Changping Line and the S1 Line Service, will be available on Saturdays and Sundays during operating hours, starting May 10, with weekdays and public holidays excluded.

According to a notice issued by the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, riders may bring two-wheeled bicycles with wheel diameters of no more than 28 inches (about 71 centimeters). Electric bicycles and any vehicles with power-assist devices are not permitted.

The 11 selected stations connect to popular cycling routes in the city.

A flat fare of 30 yuan ($4.20) per person applies under a dedicated ticket category, covering the passenger and one bicycle for a single day's travel on the pilot lines with no time limit. Tickets can be purchased through the Yitongxing app for any weekend within a 30-day window.

Bicycles must pass security screening and be wrapped in a station-provided protective cover while in the station.

Passengers must use vertical elevators and wide-channel gates at designated entrances, and may not take escalators or ride bicycles inside stations or train cars.

Transfers to non-pilot lines are not allowed.

The Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport said it will monitor the trial and adjust the service based on passenger feedback.
