TEHRAN -- An oil tanker named Agios Fanourios I on Sunday passed through the Strait of Hormuz along an Iran-designated route after coordinating with Iranian authorities, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Monday.

The tanker, which is carrying oil from Iraq, is currently in the Gulf of Oman, sailing to Vietnam, the report said.

Iran has stressed that passage by non-hostile vessels through the strait will be possible only through routes designated by Iranian authorities and after coordinating with Tehran and receiving its permission.

Iran's state-run Press TV said on Tuesday the country has officially launched a new mechanism for governing maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

"Under the newly implemented system, all vessels intending to transit the strait will receive an email from the official address info@PGSA.ir outlining the rules and regulations for passage," it noted.

Press TV added that vessels are required to adjust their operations according to the framework and obtain permission prior to crossing the Strait of Hormuz.
