You come for the vegetables and snacks, but you stay for the laughs.

A teahouse inside a food market in Changsha, Hunan province, was transformed into a comedy venue over the weekend, attracting shoppers with performances of traditional Chinese crosstalk, or Xiangsheng, among other acts.

At Sanfeng Market in the city's Yuhua district, locals with grocery bags in hand took a seat to enjoy the performances and share a good laugh. The program featured classic Xiangsheng pieces, and performances of Kuaiban (rapidly spoken verses accompanied by wooden clappers) and Shuanghuang (a two-man comic show), some of them performed in the Changsha dialect, blending traditional folk art with everyday life.

The event was part of a broader initiative by the local government to integrate cultural performances into community spaces. From intangible cultural heritage shows on street corners to art pop-ups in shopping malls, cultural resources are being brought from professional stages to venues closer to residents.

Sanfeng Market, a spot known for its fresh produce and snacks that is cherished by locals, also regularly offers cooking classes and food tasting events, transforming a routine grocery run into a more enriching experience.
