More than 2,000 runners from around the world gathered at the Huangyaguan Great Wall section over the weekend for the 23rd China-Tianjin Huangyaguan Great Wall International Tourism Event to race along a route that wound through the ancient structure and surrounding villages.

Blending sports, culture, and tourism, the event provided an up close view of China's natural scenery, historic heritage, and local hospitality.

"Huangyaguan Great Wall holds a special place in my heart," said Henrik Brandt from Denmark. "I won't stop running until I physically can't anymore."

For many international runners, the event was an opportunity to connect more deeply with China beyond what they had previously seen in books or photographs.

"It's so much more beautiful than it ever looked in photos or history textbooks," said American participant Riya Patel. "The local Chinese people are so sweet and encouraging, and I can't stop smiling the whole time because they give me so much energy."

Along the course, villagers and tourists cheered for runners, while traditional performances including dragon dances, yangko dances, and gong-and-drum shows created a festive atmosphere.

"This place is truly amazing," said Norwegian runner Lovise Zaupper. "I'll definitely come back if I have the chance."

"I've known the Great Wall is an extraordinary structure for many years," said Monica Nyherm from Denmark, who visited China for the first time. "I've always wanted to bring my two daughters to China, and this dream has finally come true."

Hosted in Jizhou district since 1999, the event has become one of the district's signature international cultural and tourism brands.

In recent years, Jizhou district has planned 40 activities under the theme of "Four Seasons in Jizhou", including the Panshan Cross-Country Race, the Huangyaguan Great Wall International Tourism Event, and the International Students' Chinese New Year Celebration.
