China expressed its firm opposition on Thursday to any arms sale by the United States to the Taiwan region after US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he would speak with the region's leader regarding a possible transaction.
"China firmly opposes any official exchanges between the United States and China's Taiwan region, and resolutely opposes US arms sales to Taiwan. This position has always been clear and unwavering," Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a regular news briefing.
Guo said China urges the US to fully implement the important consensus reached during the recent meeting between the two heads of state, honor its commitments and statements, handle the Taiwan question with utmost caution, and stop sending the wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.
"Concrete actions are needed to safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and to maintain the stable development of China-US relations," Guo said.
