Wang Yi meets UN secretary-general candidate Bachelet in Beijing

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday that China has always been a staunch supporter of and active contributor to the cause of the United Nations, and will participate in the selection process for the next UN secretary-general in a responsible and constructive manner, as he met with Michelle Bachelet, a candidate for the next UN secretary-general and former Chilean president, in Beijing.

Stressing the significant responsibilities and duties of the UN secretary-general, Wang said the selection will have significant implications not only for the direction of the UN’s reform and development over the next five to ten years, but also for the interests of all member states, especially Global South countries.

China is willing to work with all sides to safeguard, revitalize and strengthen the UN, Wang said.

During the meeting, Bachelet described the UN as an indispensable platform for the international community to jointly address global challenges, and called for enhanced multilateralism in today's turbulent world.

She emphasized that the UN should uphold the authority of the UN Charter, remain action-oriented and take coordinated steps to advance the three pillars of peace, development and human rights.

Bachelet also stressed her firm commitment to the one-China principle, and highly commended China's long-standing efforts in promoting multilateralism and the work of the UN.

She added that she looks forward to working with China and the international community to jointly enhance the status and role of the UN.
