Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Tuesday that China is deeply concerned about the current situation between Lebanon and Israel.

Israel Katz, Israel's defense minister, had said Israeli forces would not withdraw from southern Lebanon.

"Lebanon's sovereignty and security should not be infringed upon," Lin said at a daily news briefing in Beijing.

Beijing hopes that relevant parties will "exercise restraint in their words and actions, stick to the choice for peace, effectively implement the ceasefire arrangements, achieve a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, and create conditions for maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East," he said.
