Hainan University President Luo Qingming praised the Class of 2026 on Monday for their resilience and individuality during the undergraduate commencement and bachelor's degree ceremony, while urging them to serve the nation and embrace an era of rapid change.
Luo reflected on the university's transformation over the past four years, noting improved institutional strength, multiple disciplines ranking among the world's top tiers, and continued breakthroughs in scientific research.
He also recalled the collective effort of faculty and students during Super Typhoon Yagi, when the university community stood together through the storm. "The strength of this university comes from you," Luo told the graduates. "Excellence is never a single mold."
He added: "A university education is not about grinding everyone into the same identical circle. It is about helping each lock find its own key. You don't have to be someone else's standard answer. You are the answer."
In his farewell address, Luo offered three guiding principles: keep the nation and family in your heart, stay engaged with the times and act with purpose, and face setbacks with inner light. He encouraged graduates to take a long view, engage the present, and eventually lead the future.
"When you return, I promise you will see a better, more beautiful, and stronger Hainan University," Luo said.
