Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian rejected Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching‑te's "Taiwan independence" remarks and his renewed call for early approval by the United States of arms sales on Thursday.
Lai's relentless promotion of "Taiwan independence" separatist rhetoric only exposes his anxiety, Lin said, stressing that seeking "Taiwan independence" by relying on the US and through military force are bound to be dead‑end paths.
The words and actions of the Democratic Progressive Party authorities and Lai himself cannot alter the fundamental fact that the Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair, nor can they shake the solid, prevailing international consensus on the one‑China principle, Lin said. Still less can they halt the historical trend toward China's eventual and inevitable reunification, he added.
The spokesman also stressed that China's position of firmly opposing US arms sales to Taiwan is consistent and unequivocal.
