The Changxing Ocean Laboratory was officially inaugurated on Thursday on Shanghai's Changxing Island, a world-class hub for modern shipbuilding and advanced manufacturing of marine engineering equipment.

After five years of development, the laboratory has already produced a series of high-level scientific research achievements in fields such as intelligent manufacturing, smart equipment, green energy, and deep-sea equipment, facilitating the industrialization of a batch of cutting-edge technological innovations.

Built by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the laboratory serves as a quasi-industrial public research platform in the field of marine equipment. It focuses on the development of high-end marine equipment, integrating basic research, applied research, and industrial transformation.

The laboratory spans 295 mu (19.7 hectares) and is planned to include eight experimental building clusters and an innovation park.

"The laboratory has now entered a new phase of high-quality development, characterized by platform formation, the emergence of results, industrial implementation, and ecological chain aggregation. It bears the significant mission of serving the national strategy for a strong maritime nation, leading the high-quality development of the marine equipment industry, and cultivating top talent in marine science and technology," said Ding Kuiling, president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

On the same day, the Changxing Ocean Laboratory established strategic partnerships with dozens of key institutions to co-develop joint research centers, technology transfer platforms, and industrial demonstration production lines. The collaborations aim to streamline the entire chain from scientific research breakthroughs to engineering validation and industrial implementation, accelerating the application of technological achievements and contributing to the construction of a world-class marine equipment innovation platform.

According to experts, these efforts are aimed at further supporting the development of a strong maritime nation and the growth of Shanghai's marine industry.
